Every summer, millions of Europeans head south in search of turquoise water, white beaches and a week away from reality. But some of the places we escape to are also places others are forced to escape through.

When the EU’s new Migration and Asylum Pact came into effect, Civil Rights Defenders wanted to make the consequences of Europe’s migration policies feel less distant and much harder to ignore.

So we turned one of the most familiar symbols of European summer, the holiday postcard, into a meeting point between two very different realities.
